What is the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)?
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres (such as cotton, wool, silk, etc.), including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. Its primary goal is to define globally recognized requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles, from the harvesting of the raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing, up to labeling, to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.
Key Technical Criteria of GOTS Certification
GOTS imposes strict requirements across all stages of the textile supply chain. The technical details can be summarized as follows:
Fibre Content and Label Grades:
"Organic": The product must contain a minimum of 95% certified organic fibres.
"Made with X% organic": The product must contain a minimum of 70% certified organic fibres. The remaining 30% can be non-organic fibres, provided they meet strict GOTS material criteria (e.g., recycled or specific synthetic fibres).
Environmental and Chemical Management:
All chemical inputs (dyes, auxiliaries, and process chemicals) must be evaluated and meet basic requirements regarding toxicity and biodegradability.
Toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, functional nano-particles, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are strictly prohibited.
Wet processing units (dye houses, wash facilities, etc.) must ensure that all wastewater is treated in an effective functional wastewater treatment plant.
Social Responsibility:
Working conditions must meet the core norms of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Child labour is prohibited, forced labour is banned, and safe/hygienic working conditions are mandatory.
Living wages, fair working hours, and the freedom of association and collective bargaining are guaranteed.
